It isn't like they'd had plans, strictly speaking. Plans would have suggested something figured out in advance, a time and details, specifics of some kind put in places. Instead, it had just been a passing mention, Kara suggesting that he stop by later for drinks, to which he'd said he probably would. With nothing else going on, there'd been no reason for him not to. In the time the two of them have both been in Darrow, they've done this countless times, in no small part, he thinks, because neither of them really know what else to do, and because it's something familiar in the face of so much that isn't.

When he finally does make it to Kara's apartment later in the afternoon, Galen isn't even all that surprised when he knocks on the door and there's no answer. She hadn't said when to come by, after all, and if she's not here, then he figures she'll probably be back soon. He waits a few minutes, knocks a couple more times, calls her name just in case, and when there's still no answer, checks her door to see if it's unlocked. He doesn't exactly make a habit of letting himself into other people's apartments, but it seems better than walking back to his own place just to come here again later. She'll forgive him for it after a few drinks.

She can't do that, though, if she doesn't show up. After waiting a while, he gets maybe not concerned, but curious, certain he hadn't misheard or misunderstood her earlier, not sure what could be keeping her now. Only then, finally, does he get out his phone — the one he keeps with him, even if he rarely uses it — to try calling her.

The number you have dialed is not in service, says an automated voice on the other end of the line.

It seems like a mistake. He tries again, just to be sure, double-checks that he has the right number and the right contact in his phone, and gets the same response, and while he knows there's probably a very real possibility that she just forgot to pay her phone bill, a sinking feeling in the pit of his stomach tells him that there's another explanation here. He's heard about it before, the way people just disappear, though he has yet to lose anyone he knows that way. From what he's gathered, this is exactly how it goes: someone is there and then they aren't, as simple as that.

Like it could really actually be that simple.

If Kara is gone, though, then her booze isn't, and acting on an impulse, he grabs a half-empty bottle of something she'd left sitting on the table, drinking straight from it, supposing there can't be any harm in waiting around here for a while. This is, essentially, what they'd intended to do. He just hadn't figured he'd be alone.

Hearing a knock on the door is surprising; less so is when he goes to open it, bottle still in hand, and sees Lee standing on the other side. It's not like Kara would have been knocking on her own front door. Exhaling heavily, he says in lieu of a greeting, "Kara's not here."
